Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Ambitions Take Center Stage
In a recent interview, Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), highlighted Nigeria’s progress in renewable energy. With Nigerian firms now exporting renewable infrastructure to neighboring countries like Liberia and Sierra Leone, Aliyu envisions Nigeria becoming the renewable energy hub of Africa.
Electrifying Rural Nigeria: Progress and Challenges
The REA has set an ambitious goal to provide electricity access to 25 million Nigerians in rural and peri-urban areas within three years. Significant progress has been made, with 70 projects completed and agreements signed with multiple companies to deploy mini-grids. The agency is also working to reduce project development timelines by catalyzing private sector investment, including a ₦100 billion financing deal with FCMB.
