Tinubu’s Respectful Gesture
Nura Muhammad Mahe, a grandson of Nigeria’s former President Shehu Shagari, has publicly commended President Bola Tinubu for his respectful and statesmanlike approach in honoring the late President Muhammadu Buhari with a state burial. Mahe highlighted Tinubu’s personal attendance at the funeral and the establishment of a committee to ensure a befitting burial as acts of honor and national unity.
Contrast with Shagari’s Treatment
Mahe pointed out the stark contrast in how his grandfather, Shehu Shagari, was treated during Buhari’s administration. Despite being in the country at the time of Shagari’s death, Buhari neither attended the funeral nor accorded him a state burial. Instead, a government delegation led by the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, was sent, a move Mahe found lacking in respect for Shagari’s legacy as Nigeria’s first democratically elected Executive President.
A Call for Reflection
Expressing regret over the perceived lack of respect, Mahe called for reflection on the treatment of past leaders, emphasizing that their legacies, whether positive or controversial, are integral to Nigeria’s history. He concluded with prayers for the forgiveness and eternal peace of all departed Nigerian leaders.
