Nigeria’s Electoral Integrity Under Scrutiny
Samson Itodo, Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, has voiced concerns over the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s electoral process, stating that the 2023 general elections were more credible than the subsequent off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Edo states. According to Itodo, these elections failed to meet the integrity test, marking a significant regression in the country’s democratic progress.
Call for Electoral Reforms
Itodo emphasized the need for mandatory electronic transmission of results as a key reform to enhance the credibility of future elections. He criticized the current National Assembly for its lack of boldness in holding the executive accountable and called for a more courageous legislative body that prioritizes public interest over partisan politics.
Assessing Tinubu’s Administration
While acknowledging some positive steps taken by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, such as the removal of fuel subsidy and efforts to strengthen local governments, Itodo pointed out the economic hardships faced by Nigerians and the government’s failure to curb insecurity and frivolous spending by public officials.
