Falana Demands Retraction and Apology from Edo Governor
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has publicly called on Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to retract his threat against former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. The governor had previously warned Obi against visiting Edo without prior security clearance, linking Obi’s past visit to subsequent violence in the state.
Constitutional Violations Highlighted
Falana criticized Okpebholo’s statements as a direct violation of the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, emphasizing the fundamental right to life. He urged the governor to publicly apologize to Obi and ensure his safety in Edo, highlighting the government’s primary role in ensuring the security and welfare of its citizens.
Legal Action Suggested
Should the governor fail to comply, Falana suggested that Obi take legal action to enforce his rights, pointing to the increasing instances of extrajudicial killings in Nigeria as a pressing concern that necessitates immediate attention.
