Southern Presidency in 2027: A Must, Says PDP’s Abba Moro
Top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Abba Moro, has emphasized the need for the southern region of Nigeria to produce the country’s next president in the 2027 election. This, he argues, would complete the eight-year unwritten power rotation agreement between the southern and northern regions of the country.
Political Parties Warned Against Northern Candidates
During his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, the Senate Minority Leader cautioned that political parties considering northern candidates might face rejection at the polls. Moro pointed to the PDP’s loss in the 2023 presidential election as a lesson, attributing it to the party’s decision to field a northerner, Atiku Abubakar, to succeed another northerner, Muhammadu Buhari.
The Unwritten Convention and Future Elections
Moro highlighted the importance of adhering to the unwritten North-South rotation convention, suggesting that the South should produce the next president to complete eight years before power shifts back to the North in 2031. He also commented on the departure of Atiku Abubakar and Ifeanyi Okowa from the PDP, viewing it as an opportunity for the party to strengthen its position as a viable opposition.
2027 Election Dynamics
With President Bola Tinubu seeking re-election to fulfill the eight-year southern term, opposition parties are forming alliances to challenge the incumbent. The coalition, including figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, aims to leverage their combined votes from the 2023 election to unseat Tinubu, amidst criticisms of his administration’s economic management.
