IGP’s Directive for Retired Officers’ Protest
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive to all Commissioners of Police across the nation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to ensure maximum security for the planned peaceful protest by retired police officers. This announcement was made by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, highlighting the IGP’s commitment to protecting the rights of the retirees.
Combating Misinformation
Adejobi also addressed the spread of false narratives surrounding the protests, scheduled for Monday, urging the public to disregard any misleading information. He emphasized the importance of the protest as a dignified expression of grievance, free from political manipulation.
Historical Context and Challenges
The call for exiting the Contributory Pension Scheme by retired officers is not new, with successive IGPs supporting the cause. However, progress has been slow due to statutory limitations and fiscal constraints. Adejobi warned against the politicization of these grievances, labeling such attempts as disruptive.
Security Measures and Respect
The IGP has instructed all CPs to ensure the protest remains peaceful, providing adequate security to prevent any hijack by miscreants or political actors. Officers are also to be sensitized on the constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, with a reminder to treat the retired officers with utmost respect.
