Iran’s Accusation Against European Powers
Tehran has accused Britain, France, and Germany of failing to adhere to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, following their threats to reintroduce sanctions over Iran’s nuclear activities. The deal, which was signed by Iran and the UN Security Council’s permanent members plus Germany, aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions.
The Unraveling of the Deal
The agreement began to fall apart in 2018 when the United States, under President Donald Trump, withdrew unilaterally and reimposed extensive sanctions on Iran. Despite European pledges to support the deal, the mechanisms designed to mitigate the impact of US sanctions were never effectively implemented, forcing many Western companies to leave Iran and exacerbating its economic crisis.
Iran’s Response and Current Status
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei stated that the European parties have been negligent in fulfilling their obligations under the nuclear agreement. Iran has since increased its uranium enrichment levels beyond the limits set by the deal, a move that has prompted France, Britain, and Germany to consider triggering the UN snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Tehran.
