France’s foreign ministry announced on Saturday that it is engaged in talks with Mali concerning the arrest of a French embassy employee in Bamako, accused of working with intelligence services to destabilize the country. The ministry has dismissed these claims as “unjustified.”

“Efforts are ongoing to clarify any misunderstandings and secure the immediate release of our employee,” stated the ministry, emphasizing that the individual is protected under the Vienna Convention on consular relations.

Mali’s authorities, however, maintain that the French national was detained on suspicions of espionage, part of broader allegations against “foreign states” attempting to undermine the country’s stability. This incident occurs amidst Mali’s deepening ties with Russia, marking a shift away from former colonial power France.
