Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has publicly advised former President Goodluck Jonathan against seeking the presidency in the 2027 election. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sani highlighted the current disunity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform Jonathan used to win the 2011 election.

“The PDP he knew is no longer the same,” Sani remarked, pointing out that some party members in the South-West are endorsing the current president, while others have joined a new coalition. He cautioned Jonathan against wasting his time on a bid, given the party’s fragmented state.

Jonathan, who served as president from 2010 to 2015 after succeeding Umaru Yar’adua, lost his re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite having a constitutional allowance for one more term, Jonathan has not indicated any interest in running again.

Discussions about Jonathan’s potential return have intensified ahead of the 2027 election, especially with debates around a one-term Southern presidency and the emergence of a new opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Sani criticized the coalition for lacking a clear agenda beyond opposing President Bola Tinubu, noting the absence of significant ideological differences between the coalition members and the current administration.
