Federal Government Announces Cash Transfer for 2.2 Million Poor Households

The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, has announced a significant step towards poverty alleviation in Nigeria. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Sununu revealed that the Federal Government is committed to reaching out to 2.2 million poor households with cash transfers before the end of August.

This initiative, part of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme, has already seen the disbursement of ₦419 billion to five million Nigerians, with a focus on the most vulnerable segments of the population. The National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) plays a pivotal role in identifying beneficiaries based on the national social register.

Sununu highlighted the progress made under the current administration, emphasizing the government’s dedication to reducing poverty and improving the welfare of its citizens. With 71% of the disbursements in the northern part of the country and 21% in the southern regions, the programme aims to ensure equitable distribution of resources.
