A former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mark Jacob, has voiced concerns over the August 16, 2025, by-elections and re-run across 13 states, labeling them as a significant setback for Nigeria’s democratic progress.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Jacob expressed dismay at the return to an era where electoral victories are determined by the strength of those in power and their control over security agencies. “We are witnessing a regression to the days when electoral success was guaranteed by might, not merit,” he stated.

Jacob highlighted an incident in Kaduna State, where a candidate and her supporters were reportedly abducted during a strategy meeting, effectively barring them from participating in the elections. “It’s alarming to see elections proceed without the participation of all candidates, especially when government agencies are implicated in such actions,” he added.

Further criticizing the role of the judiciary, Jacob lamented its apparent alignment with the ruling party in electoral disputes. “The judiciary’s role as an impartial arbiter is being compromised, undermining the legal profession’s integrity,” he remarked.

On the broader implications for Nigeria’s democracy, Jacob warned of weakened legislative oversight, as the executive’s dominance in electoral processes threatens the independence of the legislature. “The checks and balances essential for a healthy democracy are being eroded,” he concluded.
