Heatwave Hits the Alps Hard
June’s record-breaking heatwave has caused an alarming rate of snow and glacier melt in the French Alps, resulting in water shortages at mountain shelters just as the summer tourist season begins. Noemie Dagan, caretaker of the Selle refuge, reports conditions resembling late July or early August, a month ahead of schedule.
Adapting to a Changing Landscape
With traditional water sources drying up, shelters like the Selle refuge are forced to innovate, using long plastic pipes to collect water from nearby glaciers. However, these solutions are temporary and vulnerable to the increasing severity of storms and the unstable terrain.
A Glimpse into the Future
Scientists warn that the Alps are experiencing climate change impacts nearly twice as severe as the global average, with glaciers possibly disappearing by 2100. This year’s early melt in Switzerland and the visible retreat of glaciers like the Bossons near Chamonix serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for action.
