Burkina Faso Junta Takes Drastic Step Against Election Commission
The military-led government of Burkina Faso has announced the dissolution of the Independent National Electoral Commission, criticizing it for being a financial burden and susceptible to external influences.
Behind the Decision
Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo revealed that the council of ministers approved the plan to scrap the commission, which annually consumed nearly half a billion CFA francs. Electoral matters will now fall under the ministry’s jurisdiction, a move Zerbo claims will enhance sovereign control over the electoral process.
Extended Transition Period
Originally set for July 2024, the transition to democratic rule has been extended by five years, allowing Captain Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a 2022 coup, to remain in charge. This extension also permits Traore to participate in future elections, as per the transition charter.
A Nation Under Strain
Burkina Faso continues to grapple with jihadist violence, which has plagued the country for nearly a decade, resulting in thousands of casualties. The junta’s decision reflects its prioritization of sovereignty and distancing from former colonial ties, particularly with France.
