Edo Governor Denies Issuing Threats to Peter Obi
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has clarified his recent comments regarding the visit of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the state. Contrary to reports, Okpebholo insists his remarks were focused on the necessity of adhering to security protocols for high-profile visits.
Security Protocols Emphasized
Okpebholo, through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, explained that his call for prior notification and security clearance is a standard procedure aimed at ensuring the safety of both visitors and residents. This comes in the wake of Obi’s unscheduled visit to Benin, where he donated ₦15 million to St Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences.

The governor’s initial comments had sparked widespread criticism, with many interpreting them as a direct threat to Obi. However, the state government has since issued a statement to correct these misinterpretations, highlighting the governor’s commitment to maintaining security and order in Edo State.
