Enugu State Announces Reduced Electricity Tariff for Band A Consumers

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has officially lowered the electricity tariff for Band A consumers from ₦209 to ₦160 per kWh, effective August 1, 2025. This decision marks a significant step towards making electricity more affordable for residents.

Behind the Decision

The tariff reduction is part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure cost-reflective pricing, taking into account the federal government’s subsidy on power generation. EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, emphasized the importance of this adjustment in stabilizing tariffs without the need for state subsidies.

Regulatory Framework and Future Implications

This move is supported by the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023 and the Electricity Act 2023, which empower states to regulate their electricity markets. The Commission has also established monitoring systems to ensure compliance and service quality from MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the new utility provider in the state.

What This Means for Consumers

Band A consumers in Enugu State can look forward to reduced electricity bills starting next year. However, the sustainability of these rates may depend on the continuation of federal subsidies, highlighting the delicate balance between affordability and service quality in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
