Out-of-Court Settlement Sought in ₦5.2bn Fraud Case
Dibu Ojerinde, the former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), alongside the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has opted to settle the ₦5.2 billion fraud case out of court. This development was disclosed during a recent hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Legal Proceedings Take a New Turn
Represented by his lawyer, Eteya Ogana, Ojerinde informed Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the mutual decision to explore administrative settlement options, leading to a request for an adjournment. ICPC’s counsel, Lesie Iheduru, confirmed the ongoing reconciliation talks, prompting the judge to set a new date for October 20 to either report on the settlement or proceed with the defence.
Background of the Case
Ojerinde, who previously headed both JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO), faces 18 counts of corruption and fraud, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Despite a dismissed no-case submission by Ojerinde in June, the case now takes a potential turn towards resolution without a full trial, reflecting the complexities of high-profile corruption cases in Nigeria.
