Landmark Ruling for #EndSARS Protesters
The Federal High Court in Lagos has issued a groundbreaking order for the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to pay ₦10 million in damages to #EndSARS protesters. This compensation is for the violation of their fundamental rights during the memorial rally on October 20, 2024.
Justice Kakaki’s Decision
Justice Musa Kakaki ruled that the protesters were unjustly harassed and their constitutional rights infringed upon. He emphasized that while law enforcement has the power to maintain order, such powers must be exercised within the bounds of democracy and the rule of law.
Applicants and Supporting Groups
The case was brought forward by individuals including Hassan Taiwo Soweto and groups like the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), highlighting the collective effort in seeking justice for the violations experienced during the protests.
