Ford’s Major Recall Over Fire Hazard
Ford has issued a recall for 694,271 crossover SUVs in the United States, addressing a dangerous fuel leak issue that could potentially lead to fires. This recall includes vehicles that were previously repaired under earlier campaigns, as well as newer models equipped with the same engine and updated software.
Investigation Findings
Following a comprehensive year-long investigation, it was discovered that fuel injectors in the affected vehicles may crack, leading to fuel leakage into the engine compartment. This leakage poses a significant fire risk, with symptoms including a strong fuel odor, dashboard warnings, smoke, or even visible flames.
Affected Models
The recall specifically targets certain 2021–2024 Bronco Sport and 2020–2022 Escape models that are powered by 1.5-litre engines. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that approximately 0.3% of the recalled vehicles may exhibit this defect.
Financial and Remedial Measures
Ford anticipates the total cost of this recall action to be around $570 million, which will be reflected in their second quarter 2025 financial results. The company has implemented an interim software update designed to detect leaking injectors, reduce engine power, and halt fuel delivery. However, a permanent mechanical solution is still under development.
Previous Recalls and Supplier Information
This latest action builds upon previous recalls from 2022 and 2024, which focused on software updates without addressing the root cause by replacing the faulty injectors. The problematic fuel injectors were supplied by Dumarey Flowmotion Technologies, based in Italy.
