Young workers across the globe are rallying for democracy, justice, and a brighter future as International Youth Day 2025 approaches on August 12.
The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) highlights the pivotal role of youth in forging a just and sustainable world. With the UN’s theme, ‘Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,’ the ITUC acknowledges the proactive stance of young individuals, especially workers, in driving societal transformation.
‘From spearheading climate initiatives to union organizing and standing against authoritarian regimes, young people are leading the charge for democratic values, decent work, and human rights,’ the ITUC stated. Their efforts are crucial in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing global crises.
The ITUC’s 2025 campaign, ‘For Democracy that Delivers,’ emphasizes the need to revitalize democratic institutions to serve the working class better, with youth participation being key. ‘Young people worldwide are advocating for democratic reforms in workplaces, societies, and international bodies,’ the statement added.
ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle remarked, ‘Democracy and unions face threats globally, with rising authoritarianism eroding workers’ rights. Yet, young workers are at the vanguard of resistance, championing inclusive and participatory democracy.’
Marking IYD 2025, the ITUC Youth Committee introduces a policy paper on ‘Polycrisis and Young Workers,’ exploring how youth navigate today’s multifaceted challenges. ‘Young activists are mobilizing for solutions on gender equality, just transitions, and robust unions,’ said Satyajeet Gongolla, ITUC Youth Committee Chair, underscoring their vision for democracy in action.
