DisCos at the Heart of Power Sector Safety Challenges
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has pointed out that Distribution Companies (DisCos) are the main contributors to the safety challenges within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). According to NERC’s first quarter report for 2025, DisCos accounted for 100% of the sector’s casualties, a concerning trend that has been consistent over previous quarters.
Detailed Breakdown of Casualties
The report provides a detailed analysis, showing that while no casualties were recorded by power generation companies (GenCos), certain DisCos like Aba Power, Kano, and Yola managed to avoid any incidents. However, Benin, Eko, and Ibadan DisCos were among the worst performers, contributing significantly to the total number of casualties reported.
Root Causes and Regulatory Actions
NERC identified several causes for these incidents, including wire snaps, unauthorized access, and vandalism. In response, the Commission has initiated investigations into all reported accidents and is enforcing necessary actions. Additionally, NERC is closely monitoring the implementation of accident reduction strategies by licensees and organizing programs to improve health and safety performance in the NESI.
Compensation and Compliance
The Commission also plays a crucial role in overseeing compensation negotiations between licensees and the families of accident victims, ensuring transparency and fair compensation. NERC remains committed to ensuring all licensees comply with the subsisting performance standards in the NESI to prevent future incidents.
