NMDPRA Launches Performance Review for Gas License Holders

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has initiated a two-day performance review session targeting companies with gas distribution licenses. This effort is in strict adherence to the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), aiming to elevate industry standards and service quality.

Focus Areas of the Review

The review meticulously examines regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and adherence to Health, Safety, Environment, and Compliance (HSE&C) standards. This comes at a critical time as Nigeria seeks to leverage its gas resources to address the persistent power generation deficits.

Private Sector’s Role in Power Generation

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, emphasized the potential for significant private sector contributions to Nigeria’s power generation capacity. Highlighting his company’s ability to generate over 1,500 MW for internal use, Dangote advocated for a collective effort to achieve a national output of 50,000 to 60,000 MW.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the challenges, the successful development of the Dangote Refinery serves as a testament to the feasibility of large-scale industrial projects in Nigeria, including in the power sector. Dangote’s remarks underscore the necessity of private sector involvement in transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape.
