The National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) has expressed its full support for President Bola Tinubu’s recent appointments, particularly highlighting the appointment of Nwika Deeyah as Chairman of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) Board of Trustees.

In a communiqué released after an emergency congress, NYCOP President Raymond Marcus praised Deeyah’s leadership qualities and expressed confidence in his ability to lead HYPREP towards achieving its environmental remediation goals in Ogoni land.

“NYCOP wholeheartedly endorses the President’s appointments of the Governing Council and BOT members of HYPREP,” the communiqué stated, emphasizing the alignment of Deeyah’s leadership with the aspirations of the Ogoni people and Nigerians at large.

The council also commended the management of HYPREP and urged sustained funding, suggesting the project’s conversion into a full-fledged government agency to enhance its effectiveness.

Furthermore, NYCOP appreciated President Tinubu’s initiatives, including infrastructural developments and the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology, as steps towards addressing the environmental and educational needs of the Ogoni people.

However, the council did not shy away from addressing internal issues, suspending two officials for misconduct and issuing a seven-day ultimatum to former BoT Chairman Mike Nwialeghi to account for a $100 million HYPREP fund investment, threatening legal action if necessary.

Deeyah, a former member of the House of Representatives and the Rivers State House Assembly, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, also serving as the president of Kagote, an Ogoni socio-cultural organization.
