Ogun State’s Intervention in Abandoned Baby Case
The Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, has announced that the state has taken legal custody of a two-day-old baby abandoned at Sayedero Market in Ilaro. The baby was reportedly found by a woman and handed over to the police, but allegations have surfaced regarding the child’s subsequent disappearance after ministry officials intervened.
Controversy and Allegations
In viral videos, the woman who found the baby claims the child went missing following the ministry’s involvement, calling for public assistance to locate the infant. Commissioner Adeleye, however, asserts that the baby is under the state’s protective custody legally, following proper documentation by the police, and criticizes the woman’s claims as an attempt to mislead the public and emotionally blackmail the government.
Adoption Policies and State Custody
Adeleye emphasized the state’s strict adoption guidelines, stating that individuals who know a child’s background are not eligible to adopt to prevent future complications. She declared the baby as under the care of Governor Dapo Abiodun until adoption, highlighting a long-standing practice where rescued children in Ogun State bear the surname of the incumbent governor. The commissioner also warned against unauthorized adoptions, stating such actions would be treated as abduction under the law.
