Qatar’s Olympic Ambition
Doha has officially announced its bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking a significant step in the Gulf state’s strategy to diversify its economy through sports. Following the successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar is now aiming to become the first Middle Eastern and North African country to host the Olympics.
Proven Track Record
Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani highlighted Qatar’s successful history of hosting major international sporting events as a foundation for its Olympic bid. With 95% of the necessary sports infrastructure already in place, Qatar is confident in its readiness to welcome the world’s athletes.
Global Sports Rotation
The International Olympic Committee’s tradition of rotating the Games among continents suggests Asia or Africa could host the 2036 Olympics, with Qatar positioning itself as a strong candidate. This bid also represents a key initiative for the IOC’s new president, Kirsty Coventry, as she leads the organization into a new era.
