South Korea Floods: A Nation Under Water

At least 14 people have lost their lives in South Korea due to severe flooding caused by five consecutive days of heavy rain. The interior ministry reported that the death toll could rise as 12 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Localized Devastation

Gapyeong county in Gyeonggi province, located 70 kilometres east of Seoul, was among the hardest-hit areas, receiving close to 170 millimetres of rain early Sunday. This resulted in at least two fatalities and four missing persons.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Search and rescue operations are in full swing, with teams using rubber boats to navigate flooded streets. The southern county of Sancheong has seen nearly 800 millimetres of rain since Wednesday, accounting for the majority of the deaths.

Climate Change Link

Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events to climate change. South Korea, which typically experiences monsoon rains in July, was caught off guard by the unprecedented downpours.
