US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have reached an agreement on “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine during their summit in Alaska, according to top White House envoy Steve Witkoff. Expressing optimism, Witkoff highlighted the potential for a “productive meeting” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders.
During an appearance on CNN, Witkoff disclosed that Russia has agreed to unspecified concessions concerning five Ukrainian regions, with a particular focus on the eastern Donetsk province. “We’ve secured game-changing security guarantees,” Witkoff stated, emphasizing the significance of these developments.
Further discussions are expected to detail the concessions, especially regarding Donetsk, during the upcoming meeting. The gathering aims to explore solutions to end Russia’s prolonged invasion of Ukraine, with Trump set to host Zelensky and several European leaders in Washington.
This diplomatic effort follows Trump’s decision to cease pushing for a ceasefire post the Alaska summit, a move that had previously been a key demand from Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that while a ceasefire remains a possibility, the ultimate goal is to conclude the war.
Trump celebrated the progress on his Truth Social platform, hinting at significant advancements in US-Russia relations. The meeting will also see participation from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, among others.
